Spiritual Discussion Group

The first meeting of our spiritual discussion group will be Tuesday, 21 November, at 6:30 at Dynamic Pathways. We will be discussing
Religion in Exile: A Spiritual Homecoming
by Diarmuid O'Murchu.

For many people religion no longer provides the hope or meaning they need in their lives. O'Murchu discusses the exile and alienation so many people feel today, much of which is the result of the inability of formal religion to grow and evolve.

He examines the evolving spiritual awakening that is occurring for many outside, and for some inside, these formal religious boundaries. This book is a great resource for those trying to make sense of this expanding spiritual awareness.

I will send a message to those who have previously contacted me. If you would like to join us email

Mushroom Risotto
adapted from Vegetarian Fast Foot by Rose Elliot

2 Tbs dried porcini
1 bay leaf
3 Tbs olive oil
4 Tbs butter
1 onion, chopped
12 oz cremini mushrooms, sliced
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 cups arborio rice
fresh parsley, chopped
parmesan cheese, grated

Simmer the porcini and bay leaf in six cups of water.

In a large sauce pan cook the onion in the olive oil and half the butter until soft. Add the mushrooms, garlic and rice and cook, stirring, for 2-3 minutes until the the rice is well coated.

Add 1/2 cup of the porcini water and stir well. When it is completely absorbed, add another 1/2 cup. Continue this process, stirring constantly, until the rice is al dente tender. This usually requires all of the water.

Chop the cooked porcini and add to the risotto mixture.

Stir in the remaining butter and season to taste with salt and pepper. Serve with a generous garnish of chopped parsley and parmesan cheese.

Grand Canyon Hiker's Stew

Heat four tablespoons of canola oil in a large stew pot over medium heat. Cook three pounds of cubed beef until the liquid burns off and a dark scum forms.

Add:
1 large onion, chopped
1 celery stalk, chopped
3 oz burgundy wine
3 oz red wine vinegar
3 oz beef base
3 cups water
1 tsp ground pepper
2 tsp garlic powder
2 tsp thyme
2 tsp oregano
2 tsp ground cloves
1 bay leaf

Simmer five hours, adding more water if needed.

Then add the following ingredients.

2 - 16 oz cans green beans
1 - 16 oz can carrots
3 - 16 oz cans Irish potatoes (or 3 lbs)
1 - 16 oz can whole corn

Bring to a boil to heat through. If using fresh vegetables instead of canned, simmer until tender.

Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper and thicken with corn starch.

Quotes from O'Murchu

The theological task then is not about safeguarding sacred boundaries that the 'unworthy' or 'unlearned' should not transgress, but exploring sacred horizons, the holy ground on which God journeys with all created reality.

Spirituality is concerned with that deeper, inner hunger for meaning and connectedness which characterises all humans, and is innate to creation itself. The tradition no longer nourishes or sustains me; it is not 'big enough' for me.

Our sense of exile today is not about God, but rather about the alienation caused by our cosmic and planetary homelessness. It is our sense of being out of tune with the Earth, and the clay of our own bodies, that makes us feel like aliens in our own land.

We humans do not need religion in order to live religiously. Innately, we are spiritual beings with a transparency for meaning, mystery and the divine.

At Dynamic Pathways Wellness Center we realize that we are what we eat and we become whatever our energy is focused on.

If you are eating a healthy balanced diet, you will be transforming the energy of that food into health and balance in other areas of you life.

If you are focusing on positive people, positive activities and positive happenings, that is what you will find.

Be well until our next visit
